Baking Soda & Vinegar Method for Unclogging Toilets

Supplies needed:

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • Hot water (not boiling)

Steps using Baking Soda & Vingar to Unclog a Toilet

  1. Remove some water from the bowl if it’s complete, using a small container or cup to prevent overflow
  2. Pour 1 cup of baking soda directly into the toilet bowl, trying to get as much as possible down the drain
  3. Slowly add the vinegar, about 1/4 cup at a time. The mixture will fizz vigorously—this is normal
  4. Let the mixture work for 20-30 minutes
  5. Pour a pot of hot (not boiling) water directly into the bowl to help flush everything through
  6. Flush the toilet to test if the clog has cleared.  If the clog persists after the first attempt, you can repeat the process once more. If the toilet remains clogged after two attempts, consider using a plunger or calling a plumber.

Caution: Never pour boiling water into your toilet as it can crack the porcelain.
